Body, Mind & Spirit
May 15 @ 10:00 am – 11:15 am EDT
During the “Mind segment” of the May 15th class, we will focus on ways to build cognitive reserve. Cognitive reserve means people can develop a reserve of thinking abilities throughout their lives. Cognitive reserve protects individuals against losses that can occur through aging and disease.
With cognitive reserve, your brain works more successfully. Intellectual capacity is developed by a lifetime of education, interests, and curiosity. Research shows individuals with greater cognitive reserve are better able to stave off symptoms of degenerative brain changes associated with dementia or other brain diseases.
Continued learning and engagement in challenging leisure-time activities strengthen resistance to cognitive decline. Brain health is further supported by novel experiences, physical activity, adequate sleep, stress reduction, proper nutrition, social interaction, and dealing with acute and chronic health issues.
* Each weekly “Body, Mind, and Spirit” class consists of 20-25 minutes of gentle physical exercise; 20-25 minutes of memory enrichment exercises; and 20-25 minutes of reading and discussing an inspirational or spiritual topic.
All are welcome.
